You might be here because dealing with personal problems on your own is no longer working. Perhaps feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness consume you on a daily basis. Maybe your relationship with your partner is suffering tremendously and you don’t know where to turn.

When challenges like these arise in our lives, it can feel scary to take the steps to seek a safe outlet for support. Know that you are not alone. Therapy is one of many places where you can sort your thoughts, feelings, and options for creating sustainable change in your life.

About

I have had the privilege of working in a variety of clinical settings providing individual, couples, family, and group therapy services to clients from diverse backgrounds experiencing a wide range of challenges. Before entering private practice, I worked in community mental health with youth and families affected by mental health, substance abuse, and family disruption. My professional experience also includes serving incarcerated youth referred by probation officers, providing mental health counseling to high-risk adults, supporting individuals through coming out/LGBTQ+ related issues, and providing culturally sensitive couples and family therapy.

I received my Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Concentration in Professional Clinical Counseling from John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, California. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the states of Texas and California, and I am an Approved Supervisor in the state of Texas.

Philosophy

I’ve grown to realize that most people don’t get through life unscathed. One of my favorite mantras is “The best therapists on the planet have their very own therapist,” and I live by this. I know what it is like to seek the support of a trained professional and how nerve-wracking it can feel to position yourself to build a relationship with someone you don’t know from a place of your emotional pain.

My theoretical perspectives in therapy range from relational psychodynamic theory, which focuses on understanding how your experiences of significant relationships influence the lens through which you see yourself and others, to cognitive-behavioral theory, which focuses on the relationship between thoughts and behaviors. I am also trained in EMDR Therapy for the treatment of trauma. Because therapy is not a one-size-fits-all experience; I will tailor my approach according to your individual needs.

Personal

Outside of the therapy room, I work as a part-time Adjunct Psychology and Mental Health Services Professor. I believe in harmony between work and personal life, so in my free time, I enjoy connecting with family and friends, exploring the hidden treasures in Houston (Cali girl here), and watching slow-burn dramas. If you have a good show idea, I’m all ears!

Clinical Specialties

Individual Therapy for Adults

I specialize in working with BIPOC queer-identifying clients who find themselves working to manage their depressive and anxious symptoms so that they can get to living their best lives. I also help serve clients through major life transitions including navigating new romantic relationships or separating from a significant relationship. I am most proud of my experience working with clients who struggle to reconcile their LGBTQIA+ identity with their faith or religious beliefs. I recently provided therapist training through the Houston Association of Marriage and Family Therapy entitled: “Counseling Clients at the Intersection of LGBTQIA+ Identity and Religion”. This training incorporates much of my clinical work and relevant research over the past decade. I am a proud transgender ally and honor this work as well.

EMDR Therapy

If you have suffered traumas in the past that continue to affect you in the present, EMDR therapy may be an appropriate fit for you. “EMDR” stands for Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Simply put, this treatment allows us to treat past negative experiences so that you are no longer triggered by them. Additionally, EMDR therapy has been shown to address trauma symptoms in a much shorter timeframe compared to talk therapies. At this time, EMDR therapy is offered in person only.

Couple Therapy

Even with love and the best of intentions, relationship problems can arise at any stage of a relationship or marriage. Couple therapy will allow you the emotional safety to be vulnerable with your partner so that you both can identify and process difficult-to-understand emotions and unlearn dynamics that are not serving your relationship. Couple therapy will help you set the stage for the new “dance” you will learn with your partner. Get ready to learn ways of communicating at a newfound level! I specialize in helping couples navigate issues related to same-gender-loving relationships.

Payment Options

I am currently an out-of-network provider with most insurance. However, I work with Mentaya, which will automatically file out-of-network claims for you and help you potentially get partial reimbursement for my services (subject to a 5% charge for claim submission). You can use this tool below to check your insurance and see if you are eligible for these benefits.
